Hoe ervaren en gebruiken studenten weblectures?

Whitepaper van Echo 360 getiteld Capturing student perspectives about lecture recordings (13 pagina's). Men komt tot de conclusie dat:
1. Lecture capture is broadly used by students when given the option to do so
2. Lecture capture has a direct, positive impact on student comprehension and understanding, regardless of their course of study or enrollment status
3. Students view lecture capture as a very important course resource more often than any other technology or tool

Met betrekking tot aan- en afwezigheid bij de live colleges wordt opgemerkt:

Perhaps the most controversial issue surrounding the use of lecture capture technologies is attendance. The two principle considerations relating to attendance are:
1. To what extent does the presence of lecture capture encourage students to not attend class when they may have otherwise?
2. What is the impact of students not attending class if the fi rst consideration is true? Does it change the student’s learning outcomes, impact the professor or otherwise affect the students that do attend the class?

Het was echter nadrukkelijk niet de bedoeling van deze studie zich hierover uit te spreken, maar:

When asked about their class absences, 65 percent were absent less than two times during the term. Only 15 percent missed fi ve or more classes. Of those students who missed class, a decisive 97 percent said they used the lecture recordings to catch up.

Universiteiten geven regie uit handen

George Siemens stelt in zijn blog elearnspace het onvermogen van universiteiten aan de kaak om zelf het onderwijs richting te geven.
Hier volgt de letterlijke tekst:
"Make no mistake, dramatic changes are occurring in education. These changes, due to the reluctance of the academy to map activities to the reality of the external world, are driven by external innovation. Quite simply, higher education is not in control of its fate as it has failed to develop the capacity to be self-reliant in times of change.
I’ve seen universities (such as University of Manitoba) reach out to consulting and accounting firms to provide structural and funding change recommendations. I’ve seen universities begin to partner with online course providers such as StraighterLine to extend course offerings because they (the university) are simply not capable of fulfilling these roles themselves – they lack capacity to participate in this new space of learning.
I used to think that higher education and open access would do away with the dominant role of traditional publishers. It looks like I was wrong. Publishers are now offering full course content packages that blend textbooks with faculty-produced materials (i.e. McGraw-Hill’s purchase of Tegrityg – a lecture capture software). The university’s reliance on external offerings to fill their capacity gaps is a growing trend. For some (traditional liberal education advocates) it’s a concern. For others (entrepreneurs) it’s a blessing. And for still others (traditional publishers and content creators), it’s a way to stay relevant and perhaps even become more integrated with educational institutions than was possible with a textbook publishing model."

Experimenteren met het wetenschappelijk artikel

Wetenschappelijk uitgever Sage gaat een samenwerkingsverband aan met SciVee, een video platform voor STM (Science/Technology/Medicine) publicaties. Aan de hand van een drietal psychologische tijdschriften van de Association for Psychological Science (Psychological Science, Psychological Science in the Public Interest en Current Directions in Psychological Science) wil Sage nagaan of de zichtbaarheid van de wetenschappelijke artikelen in genoemde tijdschriften vergroot wordt met behulp van SciVee's pubcasts.
In pubcasts presenteren auteurs een gesynchroniseerde video samenvattingen van hun wetenschappelijk artikel. Ten opzichte van een tekstuele samenvatting, is deze innovatieve wijze van disseminatie van wetenschappelijke informatie veel dynamischer en geengageerder. Bovendien kunnen de video's makkelijk gedistribueerd worden via internet en zo de zichtbaarheid van de auteur aanzienlijk vergroten.

Citeren en geciteerd worden

Nature meldt in "An easy way to boost a paper's citations" dat auteurs die veel citeren ook vaker geciteerd worden. Dat is niet onbelangrijk want, zoals de NRC opmerkt:
"Het aantal verwijzingen dat een artikel behaalt is de laatste paar jaar uitgegroeid tot een belangrijke maat voor de kwaliteit van het onderzoek dat erin wordt gepresenteerd. De uitkomsten van citatie-analyses spelen bijvoorbeeld een rol bij het verdelen van onderzoeksgelden. Pirate Conference

Vrijdag 17 september zal in het Tilburgse Midi Theater de Pirate Conference plaatsvinden, onderdeel van het Incubate festival voor independent culture. De keynote zal verzorgd worden door Matt Mason. Hij is de auteur van de prikkelende bestseller “Piraterij: Hoe hackers, punkkapitalisten en grafittimiljonairs onze cultuur remixen en de wereld veranderen”. Mason beschouwt piraterij als een essentieel onderdeel van ons Westers sociaaleconomisch systeem. Het begint als een tegenreactie en wordt vervolgens liefdevol geïncorporeerd. De angel is er dan uit, maar er is wel degelijk iets veranderd. Piraterij is inmiddels dan ook, zoals een Disney topman opmerkte, “een bedrijfsmodel als alle anderen geworden”.
Voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in auteursrechten, innovatie, contemporaine economische geschiedenis en ondernemerschap, maar ook popmuziek en jeugd-en tegenculturen.

De mobiele telefoon: Een medium op zich

Deze sociaal wetenschappelijke verhandeling "examines the integration of the mobile phone into every day life as a communication device and as media. It focuses on the uses of the mobile phone as a pervasive multimedia tool and its relationship to other media in the changing media landscape. The main argument of the dissertation is that the mobile phone is a medium in itself and it should also be regarded as a medium among others. In media studies the mobile phone has been perceived as a sub-media to traditional media. As a medium it has its own specific characteristics and social functions, allthough its uses may vary in different contexts and cultures. However, this argument does not mean that the mobile phone is a medium without user involvements. The role of user innovations has been important in constructing the mobile phone's role in the media field: for instance, text messaging has brought a new kind of social interaction and media form with it. Indeed, the mobile phone has influenced the ways in which we can interact with other media".

Nieuwe Blackboard-functies in het onderwijs van de Universiteit Utrecht

In het rapport van Magda Ritzen, Sanne Gratama van Andel en Ineke Lam getiteld "Nieuwe Blackboard functies in het onderwijs van de UU" worden de functionaliteiten van de ELO vergeleken met andere pakketten voor toetsen, portfolio, annotatiesysteem, wiki en plagiaatdetectie.
Belangrijkste doelen van het project waren: "het gebruik van Blackboard (Bb) te verbreden en na te gaan hoe de Bb-functies voor toetsen, peerfeedback, wiki, portfolio en plagiaat zich verhouden tot een aantal losse ICT-tools met vergelijkbare functies die in de Universiteit Utrecht (UU) worden gebruikt".

Wetenschappelijke tijdschriften en open access: Stand van zaken

In PLoS ONE berichtten onderzoekers van de Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki, over het aandeel van open access tijdschriften in de gehele wetenschappelijke productie in "Open access to the scientific journal literature: Situation 2009".
"The results show that OA already has a significant positive impact on the availability of the scientific journal literature and that there are big differences between scientific disciplines in the uptake. Due to the lack of awareness of OA-publishing among scientists in most fields outside physics, the results should be of general interest to all scholars. The results should also interest academic publishers, who need to take into account OA in their business strategies and copyright policies, as well as research funders, who like the NIH are starting to require OA availability of results from research projects they fund. The method and search tools developed also offer a good basis for more in-depth studies as well as longitudinal studies."

Een interessante presentatie (62 slides, PDF) van Elena Giglia, Universiteit van Turijn, op de ELPUB 2010 conferentie – "Publishing in the networked world: Transforming the nature of communication"- Helsinki, 16-18 Juni 2010, waarin open access tijdschriften naast de meest traditionele bibliometrische indicator, de impact factor, worden gelegd.
Conclusie: "…data show that Open Access journals can compete with older actors......as Peter Suber puts it, quality can keep pace with prestige and reputation"

Met name bij het printen van weblogbijdragen komt het regelmatig voor dat onnodig veel A4tjes non-informatie de printer verlaten en vaak linea recta in de prullen/papierbak belanden, zeker wanneer opties als blog archives en labels aanstaan. PrintWhatYouLike biedt, de naam laat niets aan duidelijkheid te wensen over, de mogelijkheid om enkel dat te printen dat relevant is. Goed stuk gereedschap.

the usability of recorded lectures. A new age in teaching and classroom instruction".

"At present, Delft University of Technology records around 10% of their lectures. This number is expected to increase in the following years. Having these recorded lectures opens the door to all kinds of new ideas and improvements for their educational program. At this moment they employ a video streaming system called Collegerama, which allows viewers with an active Internet connection to watch their lectures online. It combines a video stream of the lecturer with a series of screenshots of the accompanying PowerPoint slides.
The main research question for this project is: “How can we efficiently and effectively present recorded lectures and course material to students at universities?” This can be divided into three sub-questions:
• How can we increase the accessibility and availability of the recorded lectures in Collegerama?
• How can we make recorded lectures easier to follow, especially for foreign speaking students?
• How can we effectively and efficiently navigate and search within recorded lectures?"

Places & Spaces: Mapping Science "is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale. It has two components: the physical part supports the close inspection of high quality reproductions of maps for display at conferences and education centers; the online counterpart provides links to a selected series of maps and their makers along with detailed explanations of how these maps work. In order to understand how Twitter is practically used for spreading scienti c messages, we captured tweets containing the official hashtags of three conferences and studied (1) the type of content that researchers are more likely to tweet, (2) how they do it, and Finally (3) if their tweets can reach other communities in addition to their own. In addition, we also conducted some interviews to complete our understanding of researchers' motivation to use Twitter during conferences.".

Video pollution on the Web

"Videos have become a predominant part of users’ daily lives on the Web, especially with the emergence of video sharing services, such as YouTube. Part of the huge success of multimedia content in the Web is due to the change on the user perspective from content consumer to content creator. However, by allowing users to publicize their independently generated content, video sharing networks become susceptible to different types of pollution. As example, users can pollute the system spreading video messages containing undesirable content. Users can also associate metadata with videos in attempt to fool video search engines (i.e., popular tags, but unrelated to the content). Moreover, users can upload identical videos, generating duplicates of the same content on the system. Such pollution compromises not only the user satisfaction, but it also consumes system resources and can impact negatively aspects related to infrastructure. In this work we provide a general overview of pollution in video sharing systems. We define the different kinds of existent pollution, their negative impact to users and system and possible strategies to minimize the problem".

"There is increasing concern that most current published research findings are false. The probability that a research claim is true may depend on study power and bias, the number of other studies on the same question, and, importantly, the ratio of true to no relationships among the relationships probed in each scientific field. In this framework, a research finding is less likely to be true when the studies conducted in a field are smaller; when effect sizes are smaller; when there is a greater number and lesser preselection of tested relationships; where there is greater flexibility in designs, definitions, outcomes, and analytical modes; when there is greater financial and other interest and prejudice; and when more teams are involved in a scientific field in chase of statistical significance. Simulations show that for most study designs and settings, it is more likely for a research claim to be false than true. Moreover, for many current scientific fields, claimed research findings may often be simply accurate measures of the prevailing bias. In this essay, I discuss the implications of these problems for the conduct and interpretation of research."

Smarthistory

Smarthistory is in 2005 ooit begonnen als weblog waarin rondleidingen in het Museum of Modern Art en het Metropolitan Museum of Art als podcasts werden aangeboden. Inmiddels is de blog geëvolueerd tot een multi-media web boek ontworpen als een toevoeging of zelfs vervanging van het traditionele handboek kunstgeschiedenis.
Beth Harris, directeur Digital Learning bij het Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) en Jeff Zucker, faculteitsvoorzitter van de School of Graduate Studies aan het Fashion Institute of Technology hebben gekozen voor een uitermate eenvoudig en effectief design. De bezoeker wordt de gelegenheid geboden te browsen in kunsthistorische onderwerpen en kunstwerken op periode, stijl, artiest of thema. Daarnaast biedt de site honderden video's die eveneens in YouTube of Vimeo te bekijken zijn en die de bezoekers kunnen invoegen (embedden) in hun eigen websites of blogs. De site voorziet ook in een toegang tot de Flickr groep van het project, als ook tot een tijdlijn op het Dipity platvorm.
Geen wonder dat ze in 2009 een Webby Award ontvingen voor de beste website in de categorie "onderwijs".

SlideFinder helpt bij het zoeken naar Powerpoint sheets/slides op het WWW. Met een algemene zoekmachine als Google kon er ook al gezocht worden naar dit specifieke materiaal ("onderwerp" spatie filetype:ppt), maar met Filefinder kan mbv de advanced search optie ook op afzonderlijke slides gezocht worden!
De zoekresultaten worden gepresenteerd in thumbnails, voorzien van een downloadmogelijkheid en de domeinnaam van de herkomst. Ga met je muis over de thumbnail en een grotere versie verschijnt in een popup.
Naast een zoekmachine is FileFinder ook een directory. Je kunt door de presentaties van universiteiten, geordend per regio, browsen. Zo kent SlideFinder op dit moment 237 UvT presentaties.
Een mooie tool! Nu alleen nog die RSS feeds implementeren.

Peer review: Een handleiding voor onderzoekers

Het Britse Research Information Network (RIN) publiceert een korte handleiding voor (aankomende) onderzoekers over het peer review proces. (full-text als attachment onder aan pagina)

"The growth in the size of the research community and of the volumes of research being undertaken in the UK and across the world means that the amount of time and effort put into the peer review system is growing too, and that it is coming under increasing scrutiny. The guide looks at how effective peer review is in selecting the best research proposals, as well as in detecting misconduct and malpractice.

It also looks at how fair the system is, and at the different levels of transparency involved in the process: from completely closed systems, where the identities of reviewers and those whose work is being reviewed are kept hidden from each other, and reports are not revealed, to completely transparent systems where identities and reports are openly revealed.

The burdens on researchers as submitters and reviewers are by far the biggest costs in the peer review system, and the guide outlines some of the measures that are being taken to reduce those burdens, or at least to keep them in check".

Peter Jacso neemt de "computational knowledge engine" WolframAlpha onder de loep in zijn laatste, altijd kritische, maar opbouwende review voor Gale. En ... WolframAlpha slaagt!
Deze fascinerende tool geeft antwoord op vragen als "2,5 torus knot","10 nearest stars" en "weather Chicago vs Sydney 1990 to 1994" tot "Vitamin A in 250g sweet potato".
En als de zoekmachine het antwoord schuldig moet blijven, verwijst ie genereus naar Google!

Naschrift: Ook Google begeeft zich inmiddels op het datapad met de Public Data Explorer.

PaperRater is een gratis stukje software dat studenten hulp biedt bij het schrijven. Buiten de spellings- en grammatica check wordt de student ook geattendeerd op mogelijke elementen van plagiaat. Een paper kan worden geupload zonder dat men zich dient te registreren. Andere handige opties zijn stijl indicatoren en een woordkeusanalyse.
Handige tool als laatste check voor het inleveren van een paper.
