Data sharing is worthwhile

"Background: Sharing research data provides benefit to the general scientific community, but the benefit is less obvious for the investigator who makes his or her data available.
Principal Findings: We examined the citation history of 85 cancer microarray clinical trial publications with respect to the availability of their data. The 48% of trials with publicly available microarray data received 85% of the aggregate citations. Publicly available data was significantly (p = 0.006) associated with a 69% increase in citations, independently of journal impact factor, date of publication, and author country of origin using linear regression.
Significance: This correlation between publicly available data and increased literature impact may further motivate investigators to share their detailed research data."

Wikipedia en wetenschap

In Elsevier's Research Trends maakt Sarah Huggett in "The influence of free encyclopedias on science", melding van het toenemend gebruik van Wikipedia in het wetenschappelijk bedrijf.

"What is perhaps surprising is that Wikipedia appears to be increasingly used by scholars for their research. Research published in 2011 looked at the visibility of Wikipedia in scholarly content, and found a steady increase of the amount of work about Wikipedia from 2002 to 2010"

Thinglink:Creating interactive images

ThingLink is a nice piece of software that creates interactive images. It provides links and tags in the interiors of an image. It can be used to enrich the story behind anything from a photograph or a flowchart to an infographic or a cartoon.

Take a look at this how-to vid:

Here is an example of an infographic of the history of Apple and the famous "I have a dream" picture with Martin Luther King.

Zijn bijdrage is getiteld "How can we activate students in a traditional lecture?". (Duur video: 46.22 min.)
