Wetenschappelijke tijdschriften en open access: Stand van zaken

In PLoS ONE berichtten onderzoekers van de Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki, over het aandeel van open access tijdschriften in de gehele wetenschappelijke productie in "Open access to the scientific journal literature: Situation 2009".
"The results show that OA already has a significant positive impact on the availability of the scientific journal literature and that there are big differences between scientific disciplines in the uptake. Due to the lack of awareness of OA-publishing among scientists in most fields outside physics, the results should be of general interest to all scholars. The results should also interest academic publishers, who need to take into account OA in their business strategies and copyright policies, as well as research funders, who like the NIH are starting to require OA availability of results from research projects they fund. The method and search tools developed also offer a good basis for more in-depth studies as well as longitudinal studies."

De Impact Factor van Open Access tijdschriften: data en trends

Een interessante presentatie (62 slides, PDF) van Elena Giglia, Universiteit van Turijn, op de ELPUB 2010 conferentie – "Publishing in the networked world: Transforming the nature of communication"- Helsinki, 16-18 Juni 2010, waarin open access tijdschriften naast de meest traditionele bibliometrische indicator, de impact factor, worden gelegd.
Conclusie: "…data show that Open Access journals can compete with older actors......as Peter Suber puts it, quality can keep pace with prestige and reputation"

Academische vaardigheden

De letterenfaculteit van de Vrij Universiteit heeft, in het kader van het premastervak Academische Vaardigheden, filmpjes van een drietal onderzoekers gemaakt, waarin deze aangeven hoe ze in de dagelijkse onderzoekspraktijk omgaan met:

Bewust printen

Met name bij het printen van weblogbijdragen komt het regelmatig voor dat onnodig veel A4tjes non-informatie de printer verlaten en vaak linea recta in de prullen/papierbak belanden, zeker wanneer opties als blog archives en labels aanstaan. PrintWhatYouLike biedt, de naam laat niets aan duidelijkheid te wensen over, de mogelijkheid om enkel dat te printen dat relevant is. Goed stuk gereedschap.

Peer review. Docentenhandleiding

Door Margreet van den Berg geattendeerd op de brochure "PROOF. Invoering Online Peer beoordeling - leidraad voor docenten".

"... bedoeld voor docenten die in hun onderwijs studenten elkaar willen laten beoordelen. Want studenten leren van een beoordeling van hun werk en activiteiten, maar ze leren ook veel door medestudenten te beoordelen. De brochure is gebaseerd op ervaringen die de auteurs hebben opgedaan in het SURF-project Peer Review Online Opschalen en Faciliteren (PROOF).
Dit tweejarige project richtte zich op het invoeren van online vormen van peer beoordeling in cursussen. Het toenemend aantal online software systemen dat specifiek voor peer beoordeling gemaakt is vormde de aanleiding voor dit project."

Trading Knowledge, de Nature blog verzorgd door Frank Norman, bericht in "From Sci-Mate to Mendeley" over de geschiedenis van de reference managers. Wikipedia biedt daarnaast een fraaie vergelijking van de diverse systemen.

Internet en het brein

Open Culture publiceert een interessant interview met Nicholas Carr, auteur van onder meer "Is Google making us stupid?" uit 2008 en recent van "The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains?" over de cognitieve en culturele consequenties van Internetgebruik.

Weblectures

Interessante master thesis van E.L. de Moel getiteld "Expanding
the usability of recorded lectures. A new age in teaching and classroom instruction".

"At present, Delft University of Technology records around 10% of their lectures. This number is expected to increase in the following years. Having these recorded lectures opens the door to all kinds of new ideas and improvements for their educational program. At this moment they employ a video streaming system called Collegerama, which allows viewers with an active Internet connection to watch their lectures online. It combines a video stream of the lecturer with a series of screenshots of the accompanying PowerPoint slides.
The main research question for this project is: “How can we efficiently and effectively present recorded lectures and course material to students at universities?” This can be divided into three sub-questions:
• How can we increase the accessibility and availability of the recorded lectures in Collegerama?
• How can we make recorded lectures easier to follow, especially for foreign speaking students?
• How can we effectively and efficiently navigate and search within recorded lectures?"

Places & Spaces: Mapping science

Places & Spaces: Mapping Science "is meant to inspire cross-disciplinary discussion on how to best track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale. It has two components: the physical part supports the close inspection of high quality reproductions of maps for display at conferences and education centers; the online counterpart provides links to a selected series of maps and their makers along with detailed explanations of how these maps work. The exhibit is a 10-year effort. Each year, 10 new maps are added resulting in 100 maps total in 2014".
