The FASEB Journal publiceert een vergelijkend onderzoek naar een aantal veelgebruikte databases in de medische wereld.
"All databases were practical in use and offered numerous search facilities. PubMed and Google Scholar are accessed for free. The keyword search with PubMed offers optimal update frequency and includes online early articles; other databases can rate articles by number of citations, as an index of importance. For citation analysis, Scopus offers about 20% more coverage than Web of Science, whereas Google Scholar offers results of inconsistent accuracy.
PubMed remains an optimal tool in biomedical electronic research. Scopus covers a wider journal range, of help both in keyword searching and citation analysis, but it is currently limited to recent articles (published after 1995) compared with Web of Science. Google Scholar, as for the Web in general, can help in the retrieval of even the most obscure information but its use is marred by inadequate, less often updated, citation information".

E-lezen -en schrijven
In meerdere blogs de laatste dagen reeds aangehaald, maar te belangrijk om ook hier niet te vernoemen (spread the word), is het artikel van Steven Johnson in de Wall Street Journal van dinsdag 21 april, waarin de auteur ingaat op de stormachtige ontwikkeling die het E-book en de readers (eindelijk) doormaakt en de gevolgen daarvan op de wijze waarop wij (gaan) lezen en schrijven.

De geschiedenis van het Internet is veilig gesteld. Het Internet Archive met zijn geweldige Wayback Machine heeft namelijk een nieuw onderkomen gevonden bij Sun Modular Datacenter.
Boomers vs Generation Y
Nexislexis maakte onlangs de resultaten bekend van een onderzoek naar het gebruik van hedendaagse technologien, zoals PDA's en mobiele telefoons, op de Amerikaanse werkvloer. ReadWriteWeb weet het rapport kort en bondig samen te vatten, waarbij met name het verschil tussen baby boomers en de generatie Y (jonger dan 28 jaar) opvallend is te noemen.

Geen stemkastje, maar gewoon, met je telefoon
Antoine van Dinter wijst in zijn blog Frans & ICT op het gebruik van SMS om leerlingen actief te laten deelnemen aan de les. Niet via speciale en vaak dure stemkastjes, maar gewoon mbv het communicatiemiddel dat iedere jongere dag en nacht bij zich heeft, de mobiele telefoon. Het enige nadeel is dat er aanspraak wordt gemaakt op het beltegoed.

Correlatie tussen citaties en downloads
De impact van een wetenschappelijk artikel wordt standaard gemeten aan de hand van het aantal citaties. Online tijdschriften bieden daarnaast de mogelijkheid om ook het aantal unieke downloads van een artikel vast te stellen. Andrew B. Watson beschrijft de mate van correlatie tussen de twee meetmethoden in zijn artikel Comparing citations and downloads for individual articles in het Journal of Vision.
Watson concludeert:
1. Overall correlation between total downloads and total citations of Journal of Vision articles is 0.74.
2. Citations and downloads increase with article age in a characteristic way, but relative to downloads, citations are delayed by about 2 years and reduced by a factor of about 45.
3. For papers published in a single year, the correlation is as high as 0.8, and usually above 0.6.
4. The correlation between age-normalized statistics of DemandFactor (downloads/year) and CiteFactor (citations/year) is about 0.62.
5. Download statistics provide a useful indicator, two years in advance, of eventual citations. Downloads are also a useful measure in their own right of the interest and significance of individual articles.

Via zijn eigen weblog wees internet consultant Phil Bradley op een bijzonder handige onderdeel van zijn web site waarin beschreven wordt, voor welke vraag je bij welke zoekmachine moet zijn.
"Which search engine when" onderscheidt maar liefst een dertigtal informatievragen, die elk leiden naar andere zoekmachines. Verre van volledig, zoals hij zelf bescheiden aangeeft, maar ik zou niet weten waar op het web deze instrumenten zo duidelijk in hun context geplaats zijn.

Erich Fromm
Een interview met Erich Fromm uit 1958 in het TV programma The Mike Wallace Interview. Dit is een van de 65 interviews die bewaard zijn gebleven en beschikbaar gesteld worden door het Harry Ransom Centre van de Universtiteit van Texas.
