Docenten van alle schools deelden ervaringen in korte break-out sessies over het doceren en activeren van grote groepen. De keynote werd verzorg door Prof. dr. Martin Valcke van de Universiteit Gent. "A massively open online course (MOOC) is a model for delivering learning content online to virtually any person—and as many of them—who wants to take the course. Course activities can be scheduled or asynchronous, and a fluid structure is valuable because students can choose their level of participation and many will do so in an à la carte manner. A MOOC throws open the doors of a course and invites anyone to enter, resulting in a new learning dynamic. Although this dynamic will make some students uneasy and will force instructors to rethink at least some of the elements of their courses, the MOOC can potentially alter the relationship between learner and instructor and between academe and the wider community. As MOOCs evolve, expectations and methods of presentation will likely crystallize, becoming more consistent and more predictable. Those enrolling in a MOOC are likely to discover learning at its most open on a platform that invites the world not only to see and hear but also to participate and collaborate."

Pamela M. Kato in Review of General Psychology met "Video games in health care: Closing the gap" over het gebruik van games in de gezondheidszorg.

"Although a great deal of media attention has been given to the negative effects of playing video games, relatively less attention has been paid to the positive effects of engaging in this activity. Video games in health care provide ample examples of innovative ways to use existing commercial games for health improvement or surgical training. Tailor-made games help patients be more adherent to treatment regimens and train doctors how to manage patients in different clinical situations. In this review, examples in the scientific literature of commercially available and tailor-made games used for education and training with patients and medical students and doctors are summarized. There is a history of using video games with patients from the early days of gaming in the 1980s, and this has evolved into a focuson making tailor-made games for different disease groups, which have been evaluated in scientific trials more recently. Commercial video games have been of interest regarding their impact on surgical skill. More recently, some basic computer games have been developed and evaluated that train doctors in clinical skills. The studies presented in this article represent a body of work outlining positive effects of playing video games in the area of health care".

De Britse denktank Demos presenteert het rapport Truth, lies and the internet waarin "the ability of young people in Britain to critically evaluate information they consume online" centraal staat.

Men concludeert "that the web is fundamental to pupils’ school lives but many are not careful, discerning users of the internet. They are unable to find the information they are looking for, or trust the first thing they see. This makes them vulnerable to the pitfalls of ignorance, falsehoods, cons and scams".

"This empirical study found that more than five years after its debut in November 2004, Google Scholar is able to retrieve any scholarly journal article record from all the publicly accessible Web sites and from subscription-based databases it is allowed to crawl. From February to April 2010, four hundred randomly selected records of scholarly journal articles from eight databases were used in test-searching Google Scholar. Only two records were not retrieved by Google Scholar. The result was 100 percent retrieval for six databases and 98 percent for the other two databases. This is a dramatic improvement compared with some below 50 percent coverage found in 2005. With this kind of coverage improvement by Google Scholar, information professionals should reevaluate its value and values of subscription-based abstracts and indexes".

1. Lecture capture is broadly used by students when given the option to do so
2. Lecture capture has a direct, positive impact on student comprehension and understanding, regardless of their course of study or enrollment status
3. Students view lecture capture as a very important course resource more often than any other technology or tool

Met betrekking tot aan- en afwezigheid bij de live colleges wordt opgemerkt:

Perhaps the most controversial issue surrounding the use of lecture capture technologies is attendance. The two principle considerations relating to attendance are:
1. To what extent does the presence of lecture capture encourage students to not attend class when they may have otherwise?
2. What is the impact of students not attending class if the fi rst consideration is true? Does it change the student’s learning outcomes, impact the professor or otherwise affect the students that do attend the class?

Het was echter nadrukkelijk niet de bedoeling van deze studie zich hierover uit te spreken, maar:

When asked about their class absences, 65 percent were absent less than two times during the term. Only 15 percent missed fi ve or more classes. Of those students who missed class, a decisive 97 percent said they used the lecture recordings to catch up.

George Siemens stelt in zijn blog elearnspace het onvermogen van universiteiten aan de kaak om zelf het onderwijs richting te geven.

"Make no mistake, dramatic changes are occurring in education. These changes, due to the reluctance of the academy to map activities to the reality of the external world, are driven by external innovation. Quite simply, higher education is not in control of its fate as it has failed to develop the capacity to be self-reliant in times of change.
I’ve seen universities (such as University of Manitoba) reach out to consulting and accounting firms to provide structural and funding change recommendations. I’ve seen universities begin to partner with online course providers such as StraighterLine to extend course offerings because they (the university) are simply not capable of fulfilling these roles themselves – they lack capacity to participate in this new space of learning.
I used to think that higher education and open access would do away with the dominant role of traditional publishers. It looks like I was wrong. Publishers are now offering full course content packages that blend textbooks with faculty-produced materials (i.e. McGraw-Hill’s purchase of Tegrityg – a lecture capture software). The university’s reliance on external offerings to fill their capacity gaps is a growing trend. For some (traditional liberal education advocates) it’s a concern. For others (entrepreneurs) it’s a blessing. And for still others (traditional publishers and content creators), it’s a way to stay relevant and perhaps even become more integrated with educational institutions than was possible with a textbook publishing model."

Wetenschappelijk uitgever Sage gaat een samenwerkingsverband aan met SciVee, een video platform voor STM (Science/Technology/Medicine) publicaties. Aan de hand van een drietal psychologische tijdschriften van de Association for Psychological Science (Psychological Science, Psychological Science in the Public Interest en Current Directions in Psychological Science) wil Sage nagaan of de zichtbaarheid van de wetenschappelijke artikelen in genoemde tijdschriften vergroot wordt met behulp van SciVee's pubcasts.
In pubcasts presenteren auteurs een gesynchroniseerde video samenvattingen van hun wetenschappelijk artikel. Ten opzichte van een tekstuele samenvatting, is deze innovatieve wijze van disseminatie van wetenschappelijke informatie veel dynamischer en geengageerder. Bovendien kunnen de video's makkelijk gedistribueerd worden via internet en zo de zichtbaarheid van de auteur aanzienlijk vergroten.
